Concrete, Recycled plastic
6” H x 3” W
The PLASTIC-TOC salt-shaker is a creative commentary on the devastation that plastics pollution is wreaking on the earth’s oceans. Its shape mimics an oil rig (where plastics originate) and is made with a mix of concrete and recycled multi-coloured plastic. The concrete is hand polished to reveal the “floating” plastic aggregate. The holes at the top of the salt shaker form a figure eight signifying the eight million tons of plastics dumped into oceans yearly.
A recent study published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology found microplastics in 90 percent of sea salt brands. Adding salt to our food is a daily ritual for most. Imagine if every time you grabbed your beautiful salt-shaker and you saw that figure eight you considered how much plastics you had consumed that day. Over time that daily question would surely lead people to start making small changes in their daily habits.
